Stewart Earns Points in 3M
Performance 400
Home Depot Driver’s 12th-Place Finish Bumps Him to Sixth in Points
Date: Aug. 17, 2008
Event: 3M Performance 400 (Round 23 of 36)
Series: NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Location: Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn (2-mile oval)
Start/Finish: 21st/12th (Running, completed 200 of 200 laps)
Winner: Carl Edwards of Roush Fenway Racing (Ford)
Tony Stewart had an unspectacular but solid outing in Sunday’s 3M
Performance 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan
International Speedway in Brooklyn.
The driver of the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR)
finished 12th in the 200-lap race, bumping him up one spot to sixth
in the championship point standings. He now has a healthy 162-point
advantage over 13th-place Clint Bowyer, the first driver on the
outside looking in at the 12-driver Chase for the Championship with
only three races remaining before the final, 10-race Chase begins.
“We just couldn’t get our car to handle today,” said Stewart after
making his 20th career Sprint Cup start at the 2-mile oval. “I had
about one run where I felt like I could move around on the track a
little bit. But other than that, we were either way too loose or too
tight. To come out of here with 12th isn’t that bad, all things
considered.”
Stewart’s JGR teammates – Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin – finished
second and 39th, respectively. Busch’s runner-up effort clinched his
spot in the Chase, while engine troubles late in the race thwarted a
probable top-10 result for Hamlin
Busch remains the lead JGR driver in the championship point race. He
continues to be the series’ point leader, but his lead has been
trimmed to 222 markers over second-place Carl Edwards, who won the
3M Performance 400. While Stewart rose to sixth in points, Hamlin
dropped three spots to 12th. Stewart is 558 points behind Busch and
Hamlin sits 694 points arrears Busch.
Edwards’ victory in the 3M Performance 400 was his 12th career
Sprint Cup victory, his fifth of the season and his second at
Michigan. Busch was the only non-Roush Fenway Racing driver in the
top-five, as Edwards’ Roush Fenway teammates David Ragan, Greg
Biffle and Matt Kenseth finished third, fourth and fifth,
respectively. Mark Martin, Brian Vickers, Kevin Harvick, Elliott
Sadler and Jamie McMurray comprised the remainder of the top-10.
There were seven caution periods for 27 laps, with five drivers
failing to finish the race.
The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule is the Aug. 23 Sharpie 500
at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. The race begins at 8 p.m. EDT
with live, high-definition coverage provided by ESPN beginning with
its pre-race show at 7 p.m. The race will also be broadcast live on
SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.
